The Cucuteni-Trypillian culture, which preceded the human settlements discovered in Sumer and ancient Egypt by several hundred years, is one of the oldest civilizations in Europe (6000 to 3200 BC), named after a village in the Iasi area (Cucuteni, Romania) and Tripoli (Ukraine). The relics of this culture are present here through various pieces, of which we present four exceptional exhibits originating from southeastern Transylvania.
Catalogued under the signatures 1897/3200 BC (piece 1), respectively 1898/5200 BC (piece 3). The other two pieces have not been verified thus far (s. Birta, Afurisania, p. 400). The fifth piece (see photo above) – massive stone axe, polished, with a transverse hole towards the top, sharp active part executed transversely on the axis of the piece. Material: stone, granodiorite. Technique: carving, grinding, perforation.
Provenance: Lupac, Caraş-Severin County. Bronze Age.
Size: 177 x 77 x 71 mm; Weight: 2500 grams. State of conservation: very good. Deposited at the Banat Mountain Museum.
